How to develop Self-Worth: The Foundation of Mental Health

How To Develop

Self-Worth

In our last article we introduced a new series where we are discussing,

"What is the BIG deal with Mental Health anyway"?

We challenge you to join us on this journey and if you would love to provide feedback you can send us your thoughts to lift@liftwarrior.com.

This article is where we will do a deep dive discussing Our Mental Health with Developing Self-Worth.

Developing Self-Worth

The Foundation of Mental Health

Self-Worth is an important aspect of our mental health, deeply influencing how we perceive ourselves and our ability to navigate challenges that try to hold us back or tear us down.

As we grow older, we begin to understand that self-worth is not something we are born with but rather a quality we develop starting from our youth which we nurture as we grow and mature into an adult.

With the experiences, interactions, and the feedback we receive from a young age, we form beliefs about who we are and who we desire to become.

We will then start making an effort to consistently Create Better Values for ourselves, allowing us to become stronger with what we are capable of doing, not just for ourselves, but for the others that are in our lives.

When we are discussing life lessons, usually at the dinner table with the family, I make it a point to ask the children, "Who are you?", then I stay quiet and listen to what they have to say. At first they will say their name but then I drive the question, asking for a more in depth response, "Who are you?" and I explain that they have an opportunity to tell me something about who they truly are from their heart in this beautiful world. This is a practice we do often and I love the result because they begin to think who they are to themselves as well as who they are to others and realize it has a deeper meaning. This has been and will always be a Confidence Builder that allows them to be able to express their maturity and voice their opinions, goals and thoughts in their own journey. After all, it is crucial we teach the younger people how to handle responsibility and teach them to protect themselves.

12 Rules For Life by Jordan B Peterson

When these beliefs take root and are established, they will begin to shape their self-image that will affect every aspect of their lives, including their personal and professional relationships.

Another key to developing our self-worth is to acknowledge and celebrate our personal achievements, no matter how small they are.

We will sometimes put too much focus on our own faults and mistakes, which can hurt our sense of self-worth as time goes by. When someone I know makes a mistake I just say, "Oh, you pulled a Geno", because more than likely I have made the same mistake when I was younger. It is impossible to avoid mistakes and challenges that seem to pop up all the time but the trick is to learn and grow from them.

When we decide to focus our attention on our strengths and accomplishments, we build a stronger positive and confident self-image, I know this is easier said than done but with focus and effort this task can be accomplished.

Napoleon Hill’s Guide To achieving Your Goals

It is ok to recognize and appreciate your efforts and successes, this will reinforce your belief in your own abilities and you will discover your true potential.

I often hear people say that they don't feel like they deserve success or breakthroughs and sometimes they feel guilty for celebrating something that they deserve.

Celebrating victories or breakthroughs are so important. This is essential for maintaining a healthy, established level of self-worth.

When you Self-Sacrifice, work hard, and make it a mission to accomplish a goal or task you set for yourself, once you accomplish it, you deserve the success and the reward your efforts have produced.

When you recognize your achievements, Practice Mindfulness, start Gratitude Journaling, and do Self-Compassion Exercises, and this will allow you to significantly enhance your self-worth.

Mindfulness will allow us to appreciate the moment we are living in, reducing the tendency to dwell on past mistakes/ failures or worry about future challenges.

Gratitude Journaling is an interesting practice as it encourages us to focus on the positive aspects of our lives, this cultivates a sense of appreciation and accomplishment.

It is easy to talk about the not so fun things that have happened to us in our day. In fact, it can start to be a bit overwhelming when conversations are always negative.

When I hear people complain over and over about what has happened to them I like to get them to say one positive thing that has happened for each negative thing. When you stay in a negative mindset it will establish a root and will create a lack of confidence in your mindset, possible depression as well as establish a lack of desire to accomplish future tasks and goals.

The above self-compassion exercises teach us to treat ourselves and others with kindness and understanding, especially during times of difficulty. This will contribute to a more balanced, healthy, and resilient mental state.

Building a strong sense of self-worth also involves establishing healthy boundaries. By understanding and respecting our own limits, we can protect ourselves from situations and relationships that might damage our self-esteem.

Establishing Healthy Boundaries allows us to maintain a sense of control over our lives, ensuring that outside challenges and circumstances do not influence our self-perception in a negative way. With a solid foundation of self-worth, we are better equipped to face life's challenges with confidence and resilience, ultimately leading to a more fulfilling and mentally healthy life.

We want to hear your thoughts about these areas, especially the struggles you have endured and overcame.
